Why Your GI Bill Housing Allowance Arrives Late (and the Verification Rule That Can Stop It)
The monthly payment runs a month behind – and skips no verification.
The Schedule Runs a Month Behind – By Design
Your Monthly Housing Allowance does not arrive the same month you attend class. It arrives the month after. That is the schedule – not a processing error, not a sign something went wrong.
Plan your budget around this. The lag is permanent and predictable.
Verification Is Your Job, Not Your School's
Your school certifies your enrollment to VA at the start of each term. Monthly verification is something different – and you do it yourself. VA does not accept verification from your school, your advisor, or anyone acting on your behalf.
You verify for the previous month, even after your term ends. If your spring term runs through May, you still verify in May for May.
One eligibility note: if your rate of pursuit is 50% or less, you do not qualify for MHA at all. You may still receive a kicker payment, but the housing allowance requires a pursuit rate above 50%.
Miss Two Months in a Row and Payments Stop
This rule catches people off guard. Miss verification for more than two consecutive months and VA puts your MHA and kicker payments on hold until you verify.
VA's own example is direct: your term starts in February. You skip verification for February. You skip it again for March. Your April payment goes on hold. Verify in April and the hold releases – but you still owe verifications for the months you missed.
Do not let a term ending make you forget. Verification runs as long as you are enrolled.
How Long Until the Money Arrives
After you verify, the timeline depends on how VA pays you. VA's education benefits FAQ lays it out:
- Direct deposit: VA deposits funds 7–10 business days after you verify.
- Check with a waiver: expect about 14 days.
- Scheduled payments: VA targets the 1st of each month, with up to 5 business days for the electronic transfer to clear.
If your bank shows nothing after 10 business days, contact VA. Do not wait and hope.
Partial Months Pay Less; Term Breaks Pay Nothing
Term breaks are different. A 2011 law ended housing payments for intersession periods. If you have a gap between fall and spring terms, MHA stops for that gap and resumes when the next term begins. Budget accordingly.
How to Verify – and Who Cannot Use Email
VA's enrollment verification page lists four options:
- Text or email: VA sends a reminder on the last day of each month. These are the fastest channels and the ones VA recommends.
- Online tool: available at the link above; requires a verified VA.gov account.
- Ask VA: VA's online inquiry system.
- Phone: call 888-442-4551.
One restriction matters: STEM Scholarship recipients cannot verify by email. Use text, the online tool, Ask VA, or the phone line instead.
