Ask VA to Decide My Claim Button
Overview
This page clarifies common misconceptions about the "Ask VA to Decide My Claim" button on VA.gov.
BLUF: The "Ask VA to Decide" button tells the VA you're done submitting evidence. Only press it when you're actually done. Pressing it early is like telling your drill sergeant you're ready for inspection when your bed's still unmade.
When the Button Actually Works
The button only has practical effect in four specific scenarios:
- Supplemental claims filed without selecting a 5103 notice option
- Claims or appeals submitted through a Power of Attorney
- TDIU (Total Disability Individual Unemployability) claims filed without VA Form 21-526EZ
- Aid and Attendance/SMC claims filed without VA Form 21-526EZ
What It Does
The button adds a document to your claim file stating you've submitted all planned evidence. It's primarily useful when "the VA forgot to send you a 5103 notice" in qualifying cases, potentially saving a month-long wait.
Important Clarifications
- Non-binding: You can continue submitting evidence after pressing it
- Doesn't restrict VA: The VA can still obtain evidence and order medical examinations
- Location: Home > Check Your Claims and Appeals > Files for Your Compensation Claim > Additional Evidence section
Frequent Misunderstandings
For those who say it does nothing... You are right in the vast majority of cases. The button has extremely limited utility for most veterans.
