Hearing Care

Overview

This comprehensive guide covers VA hearing care benefits, eligibility requirements, coverage details, costs, and procedures for obtaining and reordering hearing aids and accessories.

Pro Tip: Tinnitus is the #1 claimed VA disability. If you were anywhere near loud noises (so... the military), you probably qualify. Hearing aids are free for service-connected hearing loss. What? FREE.

Key Statistics

The VA purchases approximately "one out of every five (20%) hearing aids sold in the US, for use by Veterans." Veterans file more disability claims for tinnitus than any other condition.

Eligibility

  • Any Veteran enrolled in VA Healthcare

Coverage Provided

  • Hearing examinations
  • Hearing aids
  • Hearing aid accessories including domes, wax guards, cleaning supplies, and desiccant products

Cost Structure

Copay Requirements: Veterans with service-connected hearing conditions, disability compensation, 10%+ combined rating, Former Prisoners of War, or Purple Heart recipients pay NO copays.

Additional groups exempt from copays: - Those with hearing impairment affecting treatment participation - Permanently housebound Veterans requiring aid and attendance - Veterans with significant functional or cognitive impairment

Others may owe a small copay based on income level.
