Start with the code on your rating decision or codesheet. Write down the condition, code and explanation together before looking up a percentage.

38 CFR Part 4 contains the rating schedule. Search it for your code and read the surrounding notes. This page is a reading guide, not a complete code directory.

Understand combined code numbers

Section 4.27 explains how codes identify the basis of an evaluation. For unlisted conditions rated by analogy, a built-up code ends in 99. A hyphenated code can identify a disease and the residual condition used to rate it. Read the decision's explanation rather than interpreting the numbers alone.

When a condition is not listed

Section 4.20 permits analogous ratings based on closely related functions, anatomy and symptoms. It cautions against speculative analogies and unsupported diagnoses. A similar condition name alone does not establish the appropriate code.

Prepare your next question

Bring the decision, relevant medical evidence and the schedule section to an accredited representative. Ask which criteria and version apply, and what evidence addresses them.
