Getting Started Checklist

Your VA Claim Journey Begins Here

A checklist helps you prepare. It does not submit anything to VA.

Step 1: Gather Your Documents

Collect the paperwork you'll need

  • DD-214 (Discharge Papers)

Your certificate of release or discharge from active duty

  • Service Treatment Records

Medical records from during your service

  • VA Medical Records

Records from any VA treatment you've received

  • Private Medical Records

Records from civilian doctors related to your conditions

Step 2: Identify Your Conditions

Know what you're claiming

  • List All Service-Connected Conditions

Conditions that started or worsened during service

  • Include Secondary Conditions

Conditions caused by your service-connected disabilities

  • Document Current Symptoms

How each condition affects you today

Step 3: Build Your Claim

Prepare your submission package

  • Write Personal Statements

Describe how each condition impacts your daily life

  • Request Buddy Statements

Ask people who've witnessed your struggles to write statements

  • Review Your Evidence

Ensure you have documentation for each claimed condition

  • Submit Your Claim

File through VA.gov, mail, or with VSO assistance
