Education · Funding

Figure out how to pay for your next step.

You’ve got options. Compare them, ask the right questions, and know what’s confirmed before you commit.

Keep three decisions separate

  1. Application: you asked for funding. Keep the submission receipt.
  2. Award: VA or the sponsor tells you what is approved and under which terms. Keep the decision.
  3. School acceptance: the school accepts you into a specific program. Confirm enrollment certification and how funding reaches your bill separately.

None of these steps proves the others. Use the school application organizer to track each one.

Compare your routes

Guidance checked 2026-09-10. Recheck official rules before acting. These are routes to investigate, not an eligibility decision or a recommendation to combine benefits.

GI Bill

What it’s for
Compare Post-9/11 and Montgomery GI Bill options for your service history.
Before you count on it
Ask VA to confirm the benefit, remaining entitlement, expiration and effect of an election before choosing. Multiple qualifying periods of service can need individual review.
Your next step
Get your current VA education decision and ask the school certifying official about the exact program and campus.
Check the official GI Bill route

Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E)

What it’s for
Explore employment support and education or training needs related to a service-connected disability that affects work.
Before you count on it
Applying does not approve a training plan. Discuss your employment goal and proposed training with a VA counselor. VA says using VR&E first does not deduct other VA education entitlement; prior education use can affect VR&E entitlement.
Your next step
Ask a VR&E counselor to review the training goal and how your prior benefit use affects the plan.

Dependent and survivor routes

What it’s for
Compare transferred education benefits, Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA), and the Fry Scholarship.
Before you count on it
These are separate programs with different family, service and timing rules. Family relationship alone does not establish eligibility; ask VA about any choice between programs.
Your next step
Identify the specific family benefit and request a decision before relying on it in the school budget.

VET TEC 2.0

What it’s for
Explore approved non-degree high-tech training.
Before you count on it
VA charges one month of remaining DEA, Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty or Post-9/11 GI Bill entitlement for each month of full-time training. No remaining entitlement—including after 48 months used—does not itself exclude you. Prior VA education eligibility is not required, but other eligibility rules still apply. This is not the old VET TEC program.
Your next step
Ask VA about your entitlement charge and eligibility, then verify the exact training program is approved for VET TEC 2.0. Confirm current openings with VA; a listing is not a reserved place.

Federal student aid

What it’s for
Use Federal Student Aid’s official FAFSA route to explore additional funding.
Before you count on it
Check the current form and deadlines with Federal Student Aid and your school. An application is not an aid offer. Ask the financial aid office how each source affects your actual bill, and separate grants from loans you would repay.
Your next step
Review the official FAFSA application and ask the school for an itemized aid offer and remaining costs.

Scholarships and other assistance

What it’s for
Explore scholarship leads alongside your other funding options.
Before you count on it
Each sponsor sets its rules and deadlines. A match is a lead, not an award. Verify current terms and ask your school how an outside award would be applied.
Your next step
Choose a scholarship lead, confirm its current cycle with the sponsor, and record the actual decision separately from the application.
