No stable or safe place tonight

Start here: Call 877-424-3838. Ask about immediate options and the next intake step, or ask your local VA medical center for its Homeless Coordinator.

Programs to ask about

  • SSVF (new tab) helps with homelessness prevention and rapid rehousing for low-income veteran households through local organizations.
  • HUD-VASH (new tab) combines rental subsidy with ongoing case management.
  • GPD (new tab) supports transitional housing through community organizations.

Confirm with the provider: eligibility, intake availability, any resident costs and what happens next. These programs are not confirmed beds or vouchers. Grant announcements for organizations do not tell you whether veteran intake is open.

Rent or eviction worries

Start here: Call 877-424-3838 and ask about SSVF prevention help and local intake (new tab). Bring any notices to the counselor or provider; do not upload them here.

For HUD housing counseling, call 800-569-4287 or find a counseling agency through HUD (new tab).

Cost and access: HUD eviction, foreclosure and homeless counseling is free. Other counseling may have disclosed fees, with waivers when you cannot afford them. Confirm the agency’s services, language, phone or in-person options and current intake availability.

Ask: “What help can I request, and who should I contact about my notice?” A call does not pause a court process or establish a legal deadline.

Mortgage trouble

Start here: contact your mortgage servicer promptly. For a VA loan technician, call 877-827-3702, select 6, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–6 p.m. Eastern.

VA counseling can also help veterans and surviving spouses with non-VA loans. Read VA payment-trouble guidance (new tab) and VA contact options (new tab).

Ask your servicer: which options apply to your loan, what each costs, what you must repay and what action is due next. No payment change or assistance is approved here.

HUD foreclosure counseling is free. Check HUD counseling and agency search (new tab) or call 800-569-4287. Other counseling may charge disclosed fees, waived if unaffordable; confirm service, language, format and intake availability.

Home access adaptations

Start here: compare VA disability housing grants (new tab). SAH, SHA and TRA have distinct disability and ownership or residence requirements. A disability percentage alone does not establish eligibility.

For medically justified home changes, read HISA guidance (new tab) and contact your local VA Prosthetic and Sensory Aids Service (PSAS). HISA is separate from SAH/SHA/TRA; routine maintenance is not covered.

Before committing to work: ask about your project’s eligibility, required approval, available benefit amount and any costs you would pay. Confirm residence or renter conditions directly with VA. No medical documents are needed here.
